Physicians Immediate Care has always had a big heart for our community. Several years ago, after a local high school cheerleader passed due to cardiac complications while at cheerleading practice, our administrative team began to brainstorm ways to help prevent another tragedy such as this. Many children are not screened for cardiac related problems unless signs are shown that would prompt testing; we felt that a simple electrocardiogram (EKG) screening during the required annual sports physicals could help catch a heart-related complication before students hit the field, course or pool.
In 2003, our offices began mandating an EKG be performed for each and every child that visited one of our offices for a sports physical. Not only did we want to make sure that our community’s students were as safe as possible while playing their sport of choice, but we also wanted to educate our community on the importance of having an EKG with a sports physical every year. This year we wanted to get this message heard, so we decided to partner up with the St. Lucie County School Board and the Education Foundation to offer and incentive for parents to bring their child(ren) in for a sports physical and EKG. Starting June 1, 2016, through September 1, 2016, our offices offer special pricing on sports physicals. For every sports physical that we performed during that time frame, we pledged to give back $5.00 to that child’s school’s athletic department, and they could spend that money, however, the athletic department deemed necessary. Once all were totaled, the Education Foundation would match this amount and then it will be presented to the St. Lucie County School Board.
The process was simple, when a parent brought their child in for the physical, they would fill out our “PIC Bucks” with their child’s name and school, then they would drop it in a container at the front desk. During the three months of collections, we are happy to announce that our offices collected a total of $555.00 (111 physicals performed) in St. Lucie County and this total is to be matched by the Education Foundation, which will bring the total to $1,110.00, all to be given to the St. Lucie County public schools athletic departments. We are overjoyed with the response this year and cannot wait for next year!
