Zika Virus Update

Zika virus can be transmitted through mosquito bites, sexually transmitted and from a pregnant woman to her fetus; also suspected but not confirmed through blood transfusions.

Many people who have been infected with Zika virus have either no symptoms or mild symptoms. The most common symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis (inflammation/infection of the conjunctiva of the eye)
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache

Recently there has been much media hype regarding Mylan’s price increase of the EpiPen (Epinephrine 0.3 mg Auto-Injector) which is a life-saving tool for those individuals with anaphylactic reaction allergies. The fact of the matter is the price of the item has risen from $129.00 in 2009 to $608.00 in 2016. Interestingly enough a multi-dose vial containing 100 doses of 0.3 mg of epinephrine costs about $75.00.
